CLEVER + Antibiotics — peptide synergy that boosts efficacy and cuts resistance

A 4-page infographic series explaining the synergy between yeast-derived peptides (CLEVER) and antibiotics: enhanced membrane permeability, biofilm disruption, and immune modulation — for lower antibiotic doses and stronger Vibrio kill.

As antimicrobial resistance becomes a major threat to shrimp aquaculture, antibiotic-only protocols are losing efficacy and leaving long-term environmental damage. This technical series explains why CLEVER — an antimicrobial peptide concentrate from yeast — combined with antibiotics produces a synergistic effect: stronger pathogen kill, lower antibiotic dose, less resistance gene selection pressure, and protected gut mucosa.

1. Why combine CLEVER with antibiotics?

CLEVER and antibiotics act on three parallel fronts: complementary entry mechanism, biofilm disruption, and gut microbiome balance. On their own, antibiotics struggle to reach bacteria hiding in biofilms; peptides only suppress at the population level. Together, the mechanisms cover each other's gaps — bacterial kill rises sharply while individual doses drop.

  • Complementary mechanism: peptides create membrane pores → antibiotics penetrate more easily → lower dose required.
  • Biofilm synergy: peptides break biofilms → antibiotics reach the hidden bacteria → reduced inflammation, faster tissue recovery.
  • Gut effect: CLEVER kills Vibrio while activating the immune response — shrimp stay healthier without losing beneficial gut microbes.

2. Scientific basis — antimicrobial peptides + antibiotics

Studies on E. coli show that LL-37 peptide combined with colistin drops bacterial counts below detection while colistin dose can be cut to a fraction of monotherapy levels. This is the foundation for CLEVER (yeast peptide concentrate) plus antibiotics — lower antibiotic dose, equal or stronger kill.

  • Membrane permeability: peptides disrupt the bacterial membrane and create pores → antibiotic uptake jumps multi-fold.
  • Biofilm disruption: only when the biofilm breaks does the antibiotic actually work — critical for gut Vibrio.
  • Immune modulation: CLEVER activates TLR/NF-κB → balanced cytokines → less inflammation, faster mucosal regeneration → faster shrimp recovery.

3. Benefits of CLEVER + antibiotic combinations

Farmers applying this combo correctly see 5 core benefits — affecting both the current cycle and the long-term health of pond environments:

  • Stronger antibacterial effect than antibiotic monotherapy.
  • Lower antibiotic dose — reduces selection pressure for resistance genes in the pond environment.
  • Less resistance: high-dose antibiotics are the main driver of resistance gene emergence — pairing with CLEVER cuts that loop.
  • Healthier gut: beneficial microbiome diversity preserved, gut mucosa intact, hepatopancreas spared.
  • Long-term safety: lower residues, stable environment, easier next cycle.

4. Usage guide — prevention and treatment

Exact dosing depends on pond status, shrimp age, and disease type. Here is Than Vuong's standard combination framework:

  • Disease prevention: mix CLEVER 5 – 10 g/kg feed + low-dose antibiotic (e.g., TETRA MAX) → control Vibrio spp. starting at the high-risk stage.
  • White feces / TPD treatment: increase CLEVER + antibiotic doses — synergy reduces total antibiotic over the full course.
  • Pick the right pairing: not every peptide + antibiotic combo is synergistic — call our technicians for a recommendation based on pond status and antibiogram.
  • Note: only use antibiotics after diagnostic confirmation (PCR, antibiogram). Use the right protocol — full dose, full course — with CLEVER throughout to protect the gut microbiome.

5. Cautions & recommendations

Peptide + antibiotic combinations are a major step forward in shrimp disease protocols — but only when used correctly:

  • Do not replace antibiotics with CLEVER alone in acute septicemia — CLEVER is a support, not a stand-alone cure for systemic infection.
  • Always use antibiotics with an antibiogram — wrong-target choice accelerates resistance.
  • Run CLEVER continuously even in prevention to maintain immunity and reduce antibiotic frequency.
  • Treat pond water (Vibrio Clear, MAX 4000) in parallel to remove pathogens from the water column.
📋 Official dosage from product label

Verbatim from the CLEVER (200 g) label — synced with the product page to avoid drift.

Ingredients: Protein (extracted from yeast).
Directions & dosage:

Mix the product with a sufficient amount of clean water, mix thoroughly into the feed, coat with ATOMIC or a suitable coating product, and let dry for 20 minutes before feeding to shrimp. Routine use: 2 – 3 g/kg feed, 2 times/day. For periods requiring intestinal support: 5 – 7 g/kg feed, 4 times/day. Can be fed in combination with FLASH to enhance effectiveness. Note: Seal tightly, zip the bag immediately after use if the product is not fully consumed.

Label benefits:
  • Support to enhance nutrition.
  • Supports balancing the shrimp's intestinal microbiota.
  • Provide amino acids and bio-peptides.
  • Supports hepatopancreatic-intestinal health stability.
  • Enhance the resistance and natural immunity of shrimp.
